Editorial policy

Chautauqua Local is an independent local directory. We're not owned by Yelp, Yellow Pages, or any national directory company. We live in Jamestown, NY, and we actually go to most of the places we recommend. Here's how we make decisions:

How rankings work

Default sort on every category and town page is:

1. Paid plans (Pro, Premium) appear above unpaid listings.
2. Within each tier, we sort by editorial featured rank, then review average, then review count.
3. Free and Claimed listings appear at the bottom of their tier-block — but they're never hidden. Every verified business in Chautauqua County is searchable on this site.

A business appearing higher does not mean we endorse them more — it means they pay for premium placement or they have stronger review signals. We'll always be honest about which is which.

How guides work

Two kinds of guides exist on this site:

• Auto-generated guides — like "Best Plumbers in Jamestown, NY" — list every verified business in that (city × category) ranked the same way as our regular listings. We label these clearly.
• Editorial guides — written by our editors who actually visited the places. These are signed and dated.

A business cannot pay to be in an editorial guide. They can pay for an "Editorial feature spot" add-on, in which case the spot is clearly marked Sponsored. Featured placement in our regular guides is unbought and unbiased.

How we verify listings

Every listing has a confidence rating in our database. Free / unclaimed listings get verified through:

• Phone area code — must match a New York area code (716, 585, 315, 607, 845, 518). Out-of-state numbers are flagged or removed.
• Category coherence — a charging station is never listed under restaurants, even if Google's Maps API puts it there.
• Last verified date — every listing shows when we last checked it. We re-verify on every report and on a rolling basis.

Claimed and Premium listings are verified by the business owner directly. They show a "Verified" badge.

Conflicts of interest

Pro and Premium plans pay us money. Editorial guides and ranking-by-review do not influence sales conversations and vice versa. If we ever feature a business that pays us in an editorial context, we'll mark it Sponsored in plain sight.
